Sadly, I’ve seen this sort of thing too many times in my past to have considered it merely “idiot trolling” thing. They are idiots and they are trolls. Factually accurate. However, they somehow galvanised a populous against the ideas of citizenship and always would do.
By picking the difference, they set about targeting that, as bullies always work on. The side effect being a very high profile, visible split across what’s regarded a “protected” line (gender — something people are born with, aligned or not).
The same is true of racial hatred. It is the politics of division, sure, but it’s more than that. It is a return to schoolyard antics, with a lot more power on a major dominance scale. As we are seeing with Trump and Trumpeters, these people didn’t grow up. They merely put on a suit and not all of them managed that successfully.
Alas, in much of the corporate world, people like this exist in large numbers. The Peter principle often means they are promoted to a level of incompetence they can’t cope with and use “politics” as both a defence and a survival mechanism (the characteristics sounds familiar to many across the pond now, I suspect). The same is as true in Trump’s organisation(s) as it is in many corporate positions, including classical big tech. They see power in hierarchy, not in leadership. That is the foundations of an authoritarian regime. We’ve been here before and it didn’t end well. Unfortunately, we’ve not heeded the lessons of the past. The question is whether we are doomed to repeat it.
